How do I start a business of teaching piano out of my home?

I have taught piano lessons for many years, but always for a school. I am now wanting to do it out of my home. I need information for starting my business and handling taxes and bookkeeping. Any information would be helpful. Also, if you have any advice on registration and guidelines that I need to set that would be helpful as well. THANK YOU!! :)

Check with your local government on where to register a business. There are less formalities if you name the business after yourself as opposed to creating a name.

Also you can request information from your state’s website. Or at least find someone who will point you in the right direction.

I tried to start a T-shirt business a few years ago, but then I got a real job that requires less work and didn’t need to go through with it.

Apply for a city business license, advertise, and keep records of all your start up cost, as well as miscellaneous cost during the year.

Check with your insurance (homeowners) to see if you need any additional liability insurance since you will be using your home for more than just your primary residence.

Keep records of students, the statements you send out, and your earnings; on the end of the year your tax preparer/CPA will be able to file all that is needed.

I would talk to them first to see if they have a checklist of all the receipts, and paperwork they would like you to save, making it easier come tax filing time.
Depending on the earnings, you may have to file quarterly.

I would suggest getting a business license, placing an advertisment in the yellow pages, and reading books on starting a small business. Also, remember you could offer lessons within the students home or rent a small office with a piano and give lessons.
